How Does One Become a Mercedes-Benz Certified Mechanic?

Many people think that you can just bring in your car to any shop, including specialized and high-end cars. This is simply not the case.

Not all mechanics and technicians are created equal and they certainly don’t go through the same training programs. This is especially true specialty and high-end cars. In the case of Mercedes-Benz, certified mechanics receive specialized education, training, and certifications.

What does it take to become a certified Mercedes-Benz mechanic? Here are the important things that you should know about a certified Mercedes-Benz mechanic.

                1. Complete Technical Programs

One of the main ways to become a certified Mercedes-Benz mechanic is to enroll in the Mercedes Benz Automotive Systems Technical Program (MBASTP). Founded in 2012, this program aims to provide students with the fundamental skills to work with Mercedes-Benz vehicle technology.

This particular program has been made possible in partnership with the University of West Alabama and Shelton State Community College. When enrolled, students are trained to develop automotive diagnostic skills specific to Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, post-secondary education like the MBASTP is becoming more important since automobile systems are becoming more technologically advanced and complex. In addition, most employers prefer candidates who have completed a formal training program. Many of these programs are flexible and designed for working students.

                2. Get On-the-Job Training

After completing a training program, students can then apply for entry-level positions to receive on-the-job training and gain work experience. Students can get on-the-job training positions in places like auto body shops, repair garages, and dealerships. This way, aspiring Mercedes-Benz mechanics can gain a few years of work experience which is advantageous when applying for auto body repair and maintenance positions.

At this point, it’s preferable if the student works with an establishment that specifically services import cars like Mercedes-Benz. Since Mercedes-Benz is an import brand, the parts and procedures used are different when compared to local autos. Receiving on-the-job training at a Mercedes-Benz import or repair shop is a great way to increase one’s desirability to employers.

                3. Get ASE Certification

One of the main goals of auto mechanics and technicians is to get an automotive service excellence (ASE) certification. An ASE certification is an industry-accepted method of credentialing auto technicians and mechanics.

The certification is awarded by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, a non-profit organization that has been around since 1972. The organization promotes excellence in auto repair, service, and parts distribution.

There’s a total of eight different certifications provided by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence in subjects like electronic systems, engine repair, suspension, steering, and more.

To earn certification, students are required to gain a few years of work experience and completion of formal training.
